Foods to Be Mindful of with Braces

Orthodontic treatment is an important step toward a healthy, confident smile—and a few small adjustments to your diet can help keep everything on track.

When wearing braces, it’s best to be cautious with hard, sticky, and crunchy foods. Items like hard candies, caramel, popcorn, and tortilla chips can damage brackets or get caught in wires, leading to unnecessary delays in treatment.

That said, maintaining a balanced, nutritious diet is still essential. Many healthy foods—like fresh fruits and vegetables—can absolutely remain part of your routine. Simply prepare them in braces-friendly ways, such as slicing apples, steaming vegetables, or cutting foods into smaller, manageable pieces.

It’s also best to limit sugary drinks and snacks, as they can increase the risk of plaque buildup and tooth decay around brackets.

A helpful guideline: choose foods that are gentle on your braces while still supporting your overall health.

With a few mindful choices, you can protect your appliances and continue enjoying a wide variety of foods throughout your treatment.
