Do Braces Hurt?

Worried About Braces? Let’s Put Your Mind at Ease

At Drake Road Orthodontics, we understand that starting orthodontic treatment—or even finishing it—can come with a few nerves. One of the most common concerns we hear from patients is about discomfort. The good news? The process is much easier and more comfortable than most people expect.

Getting Braces On: Comfortable and Stress-Free

Placing braces is a gentle, straightforward process. There are no needles, no drilling, and no pain involved. During your visit, we carefully clean and prepare your teeth before placing each bracket and guiding the wire into position.

You may feel a little pressure, but overall, the experience is smooth and relaxed. Our team takes the time to make sure you’re comfortable every step of the way.

After your appointment, it’s normal to notice some mild soreness as your teeth begin to adjust. This usually starts a few hours later and fades within a few days.

To stay comfortable, we recommend:

  • Choosing softer foods for the first couple of days

  • Using orthodontic wax if anything feels irritating

  • Taking over-the-counter pain relief if needed

Adjustments: Gentle Progress Over Time

As your smile improves, you’ll visit us for periodic adjustments. These appointments are quick and designed to keep your treatment moving forward.

You might feel light pressure afterward, but it’s temporary and a sign that your braces are doing their job.

Getting Braces Off: Easier Than You Think

When it’s time to remove your braces, many patients are surprised by how simple the process is.

We carefully and gently remove each bracket—most patients describe it as a slight pressure or “popping” feeling, but not pain. Then we polish your teeth to remove any remaining adhesive, leaving your smile smooth and clean.

Before you know it, you’ll be looking in the mirror at your new smile.

After Your Braces: Maintaining Your Results

Once your braces are off, we’ll provide you with a custom retainer to keep your teeth in their new position. Wearing your retainer as instructed is an important part of protecting your investment and maintaining your results.

You’re in Good Hands

At Drake Road Orthodontics, your comfort is always a priority. We’re here to answer your questions, ease your concerns, and guide you through every step of your smile journey.
